Vigil

There’s a face that stares
Over midnight cares
Lines engraved
A story of times
Of days uncertain
Where a pulled back curtain
Revealed joys or woes

Do you see the callow youth
Behind those hard won lines
A sage
Lost more than won
And now hopes to win
The dearest heart

The fate of all may be certain
All must face a final curtain
But in the fullness of proper time
The song must reach an end
Mourn rather those contretemps
Who pass before their song it done

The eyelids droop and she must sleep
Her cares laid aside while in dreamland keep
Wait ‘til morning comes again
renewed the day begins
