The Dimming of the Light

(inspired by hearing The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. It left me in tears)

The light grows dim
By open door
Between the shores
Through which your weary masses came

Your parents then and mine did too
From foreign land and distant shore
Arrived together within a dream
To become all the same

A proud lady stands with torch so bright
There she is to greet and guide
There it was they found new hope
In the new day’s dawning

On high they cry no more, no more
We will not share ours with yours,
We have ours, what do we care
The lady cries verdigris tears

The door it’s closing, shutting out
Those like us who dared to hope
A better world for our children
A land where we could be free
