Passover

As I’m Jewish I have no comment to make on Easter other than to give my empathy to my Christian friends and neighbors for their loss. They too cannot join together in prayer on this most sacred of Christian holidays and that is truly a pity.

Passover is a holiday of redemption. Where one looks forward to the year to come with hope and joy and singing Bashanah Habaah (next year). We remember the slavery in Egypt and the unjust nature of slavery of any kind.

In our country we sadly tolerate slavery just below the surface. The abuse of illegal aliens smuggled into the country such to work as domestic help or as sexual slaves in prostitution rings or for other reasons. But we also tolerate abysmal working conditions in slaughter houses, the lack of paid sick leave and many other industrial practices that along with minimum pay wages leave people trapped in unacceptable conditions.

In the Exodus, God brought down plagues to convince the Egyptians to change their ways and release the Hebrews. What can be done today? We do legislation and the companies simply count it as the cost of doing business as we don’t threaten their survival.

Let us hope for salvation for these down trodden souls and the forgotten members of society which include, unfortunately, so many members of the LGBT+ community.

  1. Hi Rachel,
    Happy Passover!

I like that you feel compassion for those less fortunate.

Because my temple is closed, we Zoom. Because Yizkor is Thursday & the use of electricity is forbidden,
we had a Zoom Yizkor service last night. I didn’t like it. I think that one of the things people get from religion is tradition. I usually go to temple every Saturday morning. I use the same book each week. I sit in the same seat. In the UK, church attendance was down so they decided to modernize the service & bring in music. Not only did they not get even one new person to attend, but the regular congregants stopped coming. People want tradition.

I did like that it was easy to get to the service. I just had to walk to my living room. I didn’t feel like I needed to get dressed up, although maybe I should have. I was disappointed that the Rabbi didn’t give a sermon & there was no Kiddush after the service.

    Have a Zeisen Pesach.
